India logged 16,135 new coronavirus infections taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 4,35,18,564, while the active cases increased to 1,13,864, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Monday. The active cases comprise 0.26 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.54 per cent, the ministry said.An increase of 2,153 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours. Otherhand, Assam has reported 74 new COVID-19 cases, taking the tally to 7,24,926, according to the National Health Mission (NHM) bulletin. In Assam, 6,639 COVID deaths have been reported while 1347 positive patients have died due to other reasons since 2020.

Amid a surge in COVID cases, Today, the Chennai Corporation made wearing of masks mandatory in public places. Moreover, shopping malls, theaters and places of worship have been asked to ensure that huge crowds do not gather. According to several doctors, due to the ‘casual’ attitude of people the numbers are rising. “The people have forgotten to wear masks and are also not using sanitizer. People think that the pandemic is over but it is not true. Doctors also urged people to abide by the ‘pandemic protocols’ so that there can be checks on the active patient numbers and also deaths.
