
Recently, Henley Passport Index which ranks all the worlds 199 passports, has ranked the Indian passport 87th in its new world’s most powerful passports list for 2022. The top spot was taken by Japan, with the country
s passport providing its holder access to 193 destinations. The index includes 199 different passports and 227 different travel destinations. India’s passport holders do not need a prior visa to travel to 60 countries, including Maldives and Fiji.
Countries to which Indians have ‘visa-on-arrival’ access include Asian destinations like Thailand, Indonesia, Maldives and Sri Lanka. There are also 21 countries in Africa that provide visa-on-arrival services to Indian citizens. There are only two European countries to do the same.The passport index defines the strength of diplomatic relations of any one country with others; essentially, the more one country has ‘ease of access’ to others, the higher its ranking.
The Henley Passport Index boasts historical data spanning 17 years. The index and its contents are based on data provided by the International Air Transport Authority (IATA). The index includes 199 different passports and 227 different travel destinations.
