Ever since boxer and now Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain got selected for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she became a household name. She became the first woman in the history of Assam to qualify for the Olympics and is the first to win an Olympic medal. People rallied the loudest for Lovlina when she assured a Bronze medal for India after defeating Nien-Chin Chen in the women’s welterweight (64-69kg) quarterfinal boxing bout. Her medal not only brought pride to India but also gave hope to the people of her village in Assam. Recently, Assam’s daughter and Tokyo 2020 Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain has been featured on the cover of the fashion magazine ‘Vogue’. On the occasion of the 14th anniversary of ‘Vogue India’, the magazine dedicated its celebration to the women athletes at Tokyo Games, who inspired millions. Currently, while she’s making the most of her time with family, indulging in her mum’s signature Assamese pork dishes, Borgohain intends to begin training for Paris 2024 soon. “Mujhe Paris mein apna dream pura karna hai, gold laana hai,” says the fervent pugilist, who got to know about boxing for the first time when her father showed her a newspaper clipping of Muhammad Ali. “My father told me how great a boxer he must be that we are reading about him in our tiny village. That day I thought it would be nice to take up boxing and achieve something too.”
