RSS's Sar Sanghchalak Dr. Mohan Bhagwat on Wednesday unveiled a book ‘Citizenship Debate Over NRC & CAA: Assam and the Politics of History’ by academician Nani Gopal Mahanta in Guwahati. Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Dr. Pratap Jyoti Handique ,VC of Gauhati University, also attended the book launch function held at Srimanta Sankardev International Auditorium at Guwahati.
At the outset of the programme, Nani Gopal Mahanta in his speech spoke about the historical analysis of Assam's NRC and CAA. Chief minister of Assam Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Mahanta, by writing the book, has challenged the Leftist thinking. He said,"For those who opposed CAA & NRC, the book is a good reply to them as the book is based on all historical facts. Whenever we enter into the debate, we must understand why there is so much resistance in CAA & NRC - it is due to different acceptance on CAA & NRC."
He clearly said that he is a supporter of CAA and will remain a supporter of CAA, but 'we also have to respect and protect our Assamese culture.'
Sarsanghchalak Bhagwat, in his speech, also said that only for political gains, both subjects (CAA-NRC) have been made the subject of Hindu-Muslim debate whereas it should not have been the case.
"CAA-NRC is not a law made against any Indian citizen. But those who wanted to oppose this new law misled our Muslim brothers by propagating a false notion that it was aimed at restricting the Muslim population," Bhagat stated. He also said that the Sangha had always pushed for the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill or CAB which seeks to simplify the process of granting Indian citizenship to non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Bhagwat added that 'we get solution of all problems when we stand together and united,' requesting all to go through the book.
